Thousand Year Flood Wedding | Laura + Kevin | Charleston Wedding Photographer

You might have heard, you might have not, but back in October of 2014 South Carolina experienced what everyone is lovingly calling the “Thousand Year Flood”.

In a span of four days at the beginning of the month it rained 17.29 inches and at the height of the flooding and rain Kevin and Laura’s wedding day happened.

October 3rd, will go down in my mind as one of the most eventful wedding day’s I’ve ever photographed (or for that matter, probably ever will). Laura and Kevin’s “thousand year flood” wedding morning started out with the announcement that their venue they have had booked for months was flooded and the roads leading to the venue were also flooded and couldn’t be driven on. That started the process of everything changing. I have never seen a bridal party AND vendor crew work so hard, diligently, or joyfully to recreate a beautiful wedding day for Laura and Kevin, despite all of Charleston being under water. After many phone calls, emails, texts, (and prayers might I add) they found Seacoast Church in Mt Pleasant. Their chapel was open for the time they needed (a miracle, since everyone in Charleston was changing wedding venues). Seacoast however didn’t have a reception hall. Laura and Kevin decided that their wedding was more about where they got married but it was who they were with and celebrating the day they got to marry their best friend. So they decided on the church’s youth room. The youth room was just what you might expect a youth room to look like, AND was painted completely black. However that wasn’t going to stop Laura and Kevin’s bridal party and vendors from making it the wedding of their dreams.

All the guests were called and notified of the change, and not one person even thought of not braving the weather and coming to celebrate. Everyone showed up, the youth room was transformed into a beautiful wedding venue, clear umbrellas and color coordinating rain boots were purchased and Laura and Kevin had the wedding they had always dreamed of. The wedding day was filled with every hiccup you could imagine but Laura and Kevin stayed joyful and stress free, enjoying every moment with their family and friends.

I had the pleasure of documenting their entire day and it will always be a wedding I will never forget. I mean, how many people can say they photographed a wedding in the “Thousand Year Flood”?
